CARBONDALE — Stephanie Spor made fans at Roaring Fork’s gymnasium feel as though they were watching someone having way too much fun with Tivo.
That’s because she kept replaying the same scene in front of them — her snagging a halfcourt steal and then racing toward the basket for a fast break layup.
Spor did that three straight times early in the second half to polish off an 8-0 run, and then did it once more in the fourth quarter as Hotchkiss ran away with a 52-40 girls basketball win over the Rams on Friday.
The senior guard finished with a game-high 22 points and eight steals to help push the Bulldogs past Roaring Fork into second place in the Class 3A Western Slope League.
“She’s really coming on,” Hotchkiss coach Dan Burke said of his star player. “When she plays well, we play well.”
Early on, it didn’t look as though Spor’s play would be enough to propel the Bulldogs, 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the WSL, to victory. Behind streaky shooting — including a 3-pointer by Rebecca Roeber, the Rams (9-5 overall, 6-3 WSL) went up 7-2 to start the game and were up 12-8 after a quarter.
But Hotchkiss pecked away, and the teams traded leads in the second quarter, with Roaring Fork finishing the half up 21-20.
The Bulldogs came out in the third quarter with a renewed energy on defense, which, in turn, fed the offense. With a bucket by Claudia Temmer to start the half, Hotchkiss took the lead for good.
“We kind of wore ‘em down,” Burke said. “Our defense was a key part of the game. We kept good pressure on them.”
A Rams’ charge pulled them to within one early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs used a mid-frame 9-0 run to ice the game. That, and they shot 11-of-14 from the free-throw lane in that final period.
Individually, Spor finished the night 10-of-11 at the line.
Celeste Comings led Roaring Fork with 13 points. Nikki Smeins added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.
Rams coach Kirk Cheney, visibly upset by his team’s performance, didn’t have much to say after the game.
“Hotchkiss stuck it to us,” he said.
Cheney’s team gets a crack at redeeming itself tonight at Basalt, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by RockyPreps. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
