Water Demons show skills in league championship prelims

MONTROSE — Five individuals and two three relays placed in the top 12 in the preliminary round of the Western Slope Championship swim meet in Montrose on Friday. All top-12 swimmers will advance to today’s finals.

Speedy freestyler Sierra Grove led the way with second place finishes in the 50 and 100 free (25.07 seconds and 54.91) — events she had already qualified for the state meet in. Ali Schiaberger qualified for state in the 200 free, taking fifth in the prelims in a time of 2:08.13.

Keevyn Scholl, who has also qualified for state, finished fourth in the 100 breast (1:13.25) and seventh in the 100 free (1:01.78). Clara Thorsen swam to an eighth-place finish in the 100 fly (1:13.22) earning a spot in the finals.

Christina Smith rounded out the individual Demons who will be going onto today’s competition after she placed 12th in the 50 free (29.24).

Schiaberger, Scholl, Smith and Grove made up the fifth-place 200 free relay with a state-qualifying mark of 1:50.11 and also qualified for today’s finals in the 400 free relay by finishing third in prelims with a 4:09.47 mark.

Another Glenwood 400 free relay squad of Bryann Milhorn, Thorsen, Meg Waibel and Abril Loya squeaked into the finals by taking 12th with a time of 4:53.51.

Glenwood, Rifle hoops postponed

Due to poor weather and road closures, Friday night’s boys and girls high school basketball games between Glenwood Springs and Battle Mountain as well as Rifle’s games against Eagle Valley have been postponed.
Glenwood’s games were scheduled to be played in Battle Mountain, while Rifle was supposed to play at Eagle Valley.
Both of Glenwood’s games have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19. The girls will play at 5:45 p.m. and the boys will play at 7:15 p.m.
Rifle will head to Eagle Valley to make up the games on Thursday, Feb. 21. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.
