GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - A 5-month-old boy who survived a head-on crash that killed his mother and another driver is improving in Grand Junction.

Officials at St. Mary's Hospital say Alexander Jacob Everett Steele has been upgraded to fair condition. He had been listed in critical condition since the Monday afternoon crash.

The boy was riding in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by his mother, 26-year-old Jenny Steele-Trover of Fruita, when a van traveling the wrong way on Interstate 70 slammed into their vehicle head-on.

Steele-Trover died at the scene. A Dodge Caravan driver, who police say caused the crash, died a few hours later.

Grand Junction Police Sgt. Paul Quimby says investigators are awaiting autopsy and toxicology test results.
