Update: New details emerge about workplace fatality in Silt
A man at a truck maintenance shop just outside Silt was killed Friday morning after he became entangled in a power takeoff unit underneath a truck. The individual, identified as Thornton resident Jose Valesco Martinez, 32, was an employee of Parkland Fuel Corporation, a corporation official confirmed.
Colorado River Fire Rescue Chief Leif Sackett said the fire district received the call at 8:24 a.m. Friday. The incident took place at the Rhinehart Oil Shop, which is overseen by Parkland.
“We were paged to a male party that was under a truck,” Sackett said. “The patient was deceased on scene.”
In addition to CRFR, the incident prompted an immediate response from various local agencies.
“Sad deal for everybody involved, and we stayed around to assist other agencies, like the coroner’s office,” Sackett said.
The Garfield County Coroner’s Office said Martinez was found fatally injured underneath his company truck. Medical examiners said Martinez’s clothing was caught in a moving mechanism of the truck. The cause of death is pending an autopsy report. The death is being investigated as an accident.
The incident has drawn the attention of Parkland’s top executives, and an active investigation with the U.S. Department of Labor is ongoing.
“We are currently working very closely with all of the authorities involved,” said Parkland Fuel Corporation Vice President Laura Varn. “Out of respect for the family, we’re not going to make any additional comments at this time.”
