Global data breach impacts Garfield Re-2 School District data

Information belonging to families and educators of Garfield Re-2 School District was illegally accessed as part of a worldwide data breach targeting PowerSchool, the district’s information system provider, an Re-2 news release states.

“On December 28, 2024, PowerSchool discovered unauthorized access to certain data through its customer support portal, PowerSource,” the release states. “On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed the Garfield Re-2  leadership team about the incident, and we have been diligently working to determine the impact on our district.”

According to the release, the data breach “primarily includes parent, student and staff contact information with data elements such as name and address information.”

“(PowerSchool) have determined that some personally identifiable information, such as social security numbers and medical information, was impacted for a portion of individuals,” the release explains. “They are urgently working to complete their investigation and determine exactly whose personally identifiable information was impacted.”

Unfortunately, PowerSchool has confirmed information belonging to Garfield Re-2 families and educators was accessed.

The data breach involves school districts nationwide and did not involve any Garfield Re-2 servers or computer networks.

“We are deeply concerned about this situation and have communicated with PowerSchool to understand the incident thoroughly,” the release states. “PowerSchool has assured us that they have taken immediate steps to secure the data and will soon release a detailed communication that we will promptly share with our families, staff, and communities. PowerSchool has also informed its customers that it does not anticipate the data being shared or made public, and they believe it has been deleted without any further replication or dissemination.”

The Re-2 School District encourages family and staff to change their password, security question and answer and any other online account with the same password and security question or answer.

“More information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services, if applicable) will be provided as it becomes available,” the release states.
