Man arrested in Rifle following reported shooting on Interstate 70

A man faces two felonies and four misdemeanors after he was arrested Friday evening in Rifle following a reported shooting on Interstate 70. Court documents state the incident involved two vehicles and escalated to gunfire during an apparent confrontation.

Brandon J. Hunter, 37, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of menacing with a deadly weapon (Class 5 felonies), two counts of reckless endangerment (Class 3 misdemeanors), one count of child abuse involving criminal negligence with no injury (Class 3 misdemeanor), and one count of prohibited use of a weapon (Class 2 misdemeanor).

The situation unfolded just after 5 p.m., when a Colorado State Patrol trooper near Milepost 72 heard a REDDI (Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately) report, according to the affidavit. The call involved a silver Nissan sedan with Pennsylvania plates and another vehicle. Both drivers initially agreed to meet at the Rifle Police Department to resolve the matter.

While en route, dispatch informed the trooper that one driver claimed the other fired a weapon. When officers arrived at the police station, they found the other vehicle, a dark SUV, with a bullet hole in the rear passenger-side door. The bullet had passed through the door and into the front passenger seat. A 10-year-old child was in the back seat during the incident but wasn’t physically injured, according to the affidavit.

Shortly after, Hunter arrived at the Rifle Police Department in the silver Nissan. Officers detained him for safety reasons, according to the affidavit. During a pat-down, they found an empty holster on his side and a folding knife in his pocket. When asked about a firearm, Hunter told officers it was in the driver’s door pocket. Officers retrieved a loaded 9mm pistol with a round in the chamber.

Hunter agreed to speak with officers and explained that the other driver had hit his car and fled, according to the affidavit. He said he tried to catch up and get the vehicle’s license plate number but claimed the other driver swerved at him multiple times. Hunter told officers he feared for his life and fired two shots at the vehicle to scare the driver.

According to the affidavit, the bullet hole and trajectory in the SUV matched Hunter’s account of firing a weapon, leading investigators to believe the recovered pistol was used in the shooting. No injuries were reported in the incident.

According to the Garfield County Courthouse, Hunter’s bond was set at $3,500 surety and $500 cash, with conditions including no new offenses. Hunter is scheduled to appear in court on bond at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 22.
