Obituary: Frieda Jackson
June 2, 1924 – December 9, 2024
After 100 years, six months, and seven days, Frieda Alene Hammerich Jackson left her family for new adventures. She was born June 2, 1924, in Donald, Oregon to a Four Mile Creek pioneer family, William Claus Hammerich and Anna Elsabe (Verdieck) Hammerich. Shortly after her birth, the family returned to the ranch on Four Mile. She graduated at age 16 from Garfield County High School, then attended the University of Denver for two years of secretarial training. After completing her course work, she worked for Mobile Oil in Denver before returning to Glenwood to work at the Hotel Colorado when it served as a Naval Hospital during World War II. In 1947, Frieda married neighbor, William B. Jackson. They bought his parents’ place on Four Mile where they ranched until 1971 while raising a daughter and a son. During this time, she also worked part time for the law firm of Delaney and Balcomb. When she retired, she became an avid cross-country skier and hiker. In her early 60’s, she decided to learn to swim and to play golf. Frieda was also known for her beautiful knitting, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery skills. She spent her last five years at Roaring Fork Senior Living where she was dearly loved by the residents, staff, and Hospice caretakers.
Frieda is survived by her daughter, Ann Shew, of Kenai, Alaska, son, Bill Jackson, of Silt, Colorado, and granddaughter, Erin Shew of Anchorage, Alaska. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Hammerich, Katrina Hammerich, and Kathleen Hammerich Kennon, and brother, Bill Hammerich.
Special thanks to her niece, Sandy Jackson, for her loving care of Frieda, and to Dory from Hospice, Frieda’s beloved bathing assistant, for always listening. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to a worthy cause or a special talent be shared with others.
