Garfield County prep sports roundup for Aug. 29-31

Football

The Glenwood Demons evened their season’s record at 1-1 with a dominant 35-13 home win at Stubler Memorial Field on Friday night. Running back Mason Markovich turned in a performance of 219 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns to pave the way for the non-league triumph. Glenwood will be on their home turf again this Saturday afternoon when they will take on Northridge (Greeley) at 1 p.m.

The step up in classification to 3A was not kind to the Rifle Bears on Friday night in Grand Junction. The host Tigers pitched a 48-0 shutout at the Bears. Junction accounted for 35 of their points in the second quarter. Two of those touchdowns came on defensive scores. Rifle will try to bounce back on Friday night when they will host Basalt.

In a return to varsity football after a one year hiatus, the Roaring Fork Rams got a big road win at Ellicot on Friday night by a narrow 14-13 score. The 1A Rams will take on Yuma Friday night in Carbondale. Coal Ridge (0-1) and Grand Valley (0-1) were both idle this week.



Volleyball

The Glenwood girls (4-1) continued to look the part of a contender on the young season by defeating Basalt 3-0 on Thursday night at the Chavez-Spencer Gym. Glenwood will be off until Saturday when they will host St. Mary’s Academy.

After a Wednesday night win at Vail Mountain, the Roaring Fork Rams (2-4) dropped a 3-0 decision to the Steamboat Sailors on Friday night in Carbondale. The Rams will host rival Basalt on Thursday night.



The Coal Ridge ladies (2-5) won 3-0 on Thursday night in Hotchkiss against North Fork. The Titans then made the long trip to Gunnison on Saturday afternoon and fell 3-1 to the undefeated Cowboys.

Grand Valley (3-3) lost 3-0 at Rangely on Friday. The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at Plateau Valley.

The Rifle Bears (0-4) were idle over the weekend.

Soccer

Glenwood (2-0-1) had a hard-fought affair with Coal Ridge on Friday night, but it was the Demons who came out on top by a 2-1 count. On Saturday afternoon, the Demons took a 1-0 win over Frontier Academy. Glenwood hits the road Tuesday to face Battle Mountain in a critical league contest.

Undefeated Rifle (3-0) topped Montrose 2-1 on Thursday. The Bears next game will be in Rifle on September 12 against Roaring Fork.

Speaking of the RF Rams, they were idle this weekend in preparation for Thursday’s trip to Basalt to take on the Longhorns.

 Softball

The Rifle Bears (4-2) faced off against Montrose in a home double-header on Friday. The Bears got the win 8-2 in the opener, but fell 11-9 in the second game. Rifle will host Palisade on Tuesday.

Cross Country

The Coal Ridge boys and girls had a big result at Friday’s Grand Mesa Invitational, with both teams taking home first place team finishes. The Titans boys were led by Owen Evans, 20 minutes, 32 seconds, which placed him 2nd overall in the meet. Kevin Parker (21:07, 3rd), Jake Curt, (21:12, 4th), Brody Evans (21:28, 8th) were the other Coal Ridge boys in the top ten. The Titans are currently ranked #9 in the state’s class 3A cross country poll.

For the girls, Coal Ridge’s championship contingent was led by meet winner Effie Fletcher (22:16, 1st), Hailey Whitman (25:17, 13th), Faye Goodman (25:22, 14th), Rylee Hedberg (25:23, 15th), and Dani Curt (25:59, 18th).

Coal Ridge is off until Friday, September 13 when they will host their own invitational at the VIX Park in New Castle.

Glenwood’s Demons finished second as a team in the Grand Mesa Invitational. Top runners for the Demons were Ty Hesse (21:13, 6th), Tanner Merritt (21:14, 7th), Finn Long ((21:34, 9th), and Eli Meyer (23:03, 20th). Glenwood will be back on the roads and trails this Saturday at the Eagle Valley Invite.

The Glenwood girls finished fifth as a team on the mountain trails at Grand Mesa. Quinn Waaler (24:22, 9th) and Eva Hassel (29:23, 29th) paced the Demons. Rifle was at the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational on Saturday, but no meet results had been posted at press time.
