Garfield County prep sports roundup for Oct. 21-29

Football
Glenwood Springs (5-3) was idle last weekend. The Demons will travel to Steamboat Friday night in a must-win game. Coal Ridge (5-3) ventured to Aspen and dropped a close 21-14 final score. Roaring Fork (3-5) was at Cedaredge on Friday and the Bruins bested the Rams by a 48-14 count. Rifle (0-8) lost at Eagle Valley 21-0, and Grand Valley came up on the short end of a 35-7 score to North Fork.
Volleyball
Glenwood Springs (14-4) lost 3-0 to Eagle Valley on Tuesday, but bounced back on the road and grabbed a 3-1 win at Summiit on Thursday. Gianna Zambrano had 24 digs, Emory Walter contributed 22 assists, and Grace Sims pitched in with 10 kills against Summit. Roaring Fork (9-11) lost a tight 3-2 match on Tuesday versus Aspen. Rifle (2-15) lost 3-0 against Delta on Tuesday and a close 3-2 decision to Cedaredge on Thursday. Coal Ridge (9-10) won their only game of the week on Thursday 3-0 against Olathe.
Soccer
Glenwood (7-5-3) tied Steamboat 1-1 on Tuesday and won at Eagle Valley 1-0 on Thursday. The Demons then got their second tie of the week, a 2-2 draw at Vail Christian on Saturday. Roaring Fork (10-3-2) lost 4-3 at Montrose on Tuesday, they then escaped with a tight 1-0 win in Carbondale against Vail Mountain on Thursday. Saturday saw the Rams host cross-town Colorado Rocky Mountain School and take a 5-0 win. Rifle (12-2-1) wrapped up its regular season winning Tuesday at Summit and then shutting out Aspen 3-0 at home on Thursday. Coal Ridge (9-4-2) also ended their regular season schedule with a 3=0 win at Basalt on Thursday. Grand Valley (5-8-1) lost to Aspen 5-1.
Cross country
The regional meets were on tap for all classifications last weekend. The Coal Ridge boys and girls were at the 3A Region 1 qualifying meet at the Fraser Valley Sports Complex. The Titan boys finished runner-up to D’Evelyn, and the girls were part of a 1,2,3 valley finish with Aspen winning the regional title, Coal Ridge coming in second, and Basalt taking the final spot on the podium in third.
Individual results for the boys of Coal Ridge were Jake Curt (18 minutes, 17 seconds, 2nd), Jesse Richel, (19:35, 12th), Owen Evans (19:38, 13th), Kevin Parker, (19:45, 15th), Brody Evans, 19:45, 16th), Kyler Jensen, (21:07, 31st), Jaxon Singh, 21:53, 35th). Basalt’s Towler Scott was the regional champ in a time of 18:02.
Effie Fletcher was the girls’ regional champion for Coal Ridge, running a time of 20:20 to outdistance the rest of the field. Hailey Whitman, (21:52, 6th), Faye Goodman, (22:45, 14th), Rylee Hedberg, (23:12, 20th), Ashley Sanders, ( 24:18, 31st), Jordan Terrell, (26:32,47th), and Teagan Wheeler, (26:36, 48th) rounded out the Titan ladies.
By virtue of their second place finishes, the Coal Ridge boys and girls both qualified for Saturday’s state cross country meet.
Glenwood and Rifle were at the 4A Region 1 meet in Arvada on Friday. Finishers in order for the Glenwood boys were Finn Long (18:18, 43rd), Tanner Merritt (18:50, 56th), Ty Hesse, 19:37, 70th), Ezra Goscha (19:41, 71st), Noah Incze (20:44, 87th), Winslow Proctor, (22:17, 98th), Liam Halliwell (22:53, 100th), Charlie Hippensteel (23:27, 102nd). For the Rifle boys it was Oliver Maness (18:44, 52nd), Alex Weisbrod,( 21:09, 94th), Gage Goin, (22:37,99th), and Carter Reider, 24:23, 103rd).
On the girls side for Glenwood, Quinn Waaler led the way (23:27, 63rd), she was followed by Eva Hassel (24:06, 73rd), Allison West, (26:00, 84th), Kayla McCaslin, (28:03, 88th), Braith Norton, (29:04, 91st), Dara Norton, (31:20, 94th), and Sophia Vaden (31:28, 95th). Ana Robinson, qualifying for the 4A state meet, turned in an exceptional 5th place performance for Rifle with a time of 19:21. Also for Rifle, Simone Maness at 25:40 (83rd) and Olivia Heisig (28:30, 89th) finished well for the Bears.
