Garfield County prep sports roundup for Oct. 29 to Nov. 2
Soccer
State playoffs began last week for five Garfield County teams. Glenwood (7-6-3) ended the season with a 6-3 home loss to Montrose on Thursday and Grand Valley bowed out in the first round also by losing to Fountain Valley 6-0. Roaring Fork (11-3-2), Rifle (11-3-2), and Coal Ridge (10-4-2) all posted victories. The Rams and Bears will host second round games on Tuesday, while the Titans will face Kent Denver on the road the same day.
Football
All of the Garfield County football teams concluded their seasons on Friday night except for Glenwood Springs. The Demons (5-4) traveled to Steamboat on Saturday afternoon and dropped a 17-6 decision to the Sailors. Glenwood will be at Palisade on Friday. Coal Ridge (5-4) lost on Friday to Delta 22-7, ending the Titan’s slim playoff hopes. Roaring Fork (3-6) lost at home to North Fork 41-6. Grand Valley (2-7) was defeated 53-6 to state-ranked Meeker. Rifle was idle. Basalt continued its undefeated March through the fall season by securing the 2A league title with a win over Aspen. The Longhorns will enter the state playoffs as one of the top-seeded teams this weekend.
Volleyball
The Glenwood girls (16-6) will move into the 4A state playoffs this weekend. The Demons lost their final league match 3-2 to Battle Mountain on Tuesday, before winning two out of three matches at the weekend Coal Ridge Tournament. Roaring Fork (9-13) lost at home 3-0 to North Fork on Tuesday to conclude their season. Coal Ridge (11-12) defeated Valley 2-0 on Saturday. Rifle (2-21) lost to Pagosa Springs on Saturday to wrap up their year.
Cross Country
The state cross country meet was held on Saturday in Colorado Springs. Rifle’s Ana Robinson placed 18th overall in the girls’ 4A classification, running a 5k time of 19:36. The Rifle senior concludes a solid season in which she was near the top of the state’s best all season. In class 3A, the Coal Ridge girls placed seventh overall with Effie Fletcher leading the way in 15th place with a time of 19:50. Hailey Whitman (20:26, 32nd), Faye Goodman (21:03, 49th), Rylee Hedberg (22:22, 87th), and Ashley Sanders (22:55, 98th) led the way. The Titan boys finished in 15th place as a team. Jake Curt (17:24, 35th), Owen Evans (17:58, 71st), Jesse Richel (18:35, 94th), Kevin Parker (18:50, 102nd), and Brody Evans (18:52, 105th) were the top runners.
In class 2A, Grand Valley’s Craig Cotter was 29th overall with a time of 17:50. The girls of Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale turned in an outstanding performance, placing sixth as a team. Genevieve Vickers (21:21, 22nd), Kayla Steele (21:25, 23rd), and Abigail O’Keefe (22:29, 46th) propelled the high finish.
